Erin Reagan Voight
Erin had just gotten back from lunch. Normally, she would have just finished up her paperwork and gotten on with the rest of her day without having a panic attack. That was until she saw the file that Kev had left on her desk. She groaned when she read the note about the case. There had been no warrant. All of the evidence had been tainted and was not usable. Looking down she saw Hank’s name on the case and instantly felt like hurling something at a wall. Erin grabbed the case file, her purse, and keys. The woman moved towards the door of her office and if anyone so much as crossed her, it was likely they were going to be getting an attitude adjustment.
Was getting Hank to act like a normal cop really so hard? Clearly it was. It was probably better that she took the case back to him, rather than getting Kev to do it. She could only imagine the parts of people she would be picking off the floor for that decision. Shutting the door to her car, she sighed tossing her paperwork into the seat beside her. The drive to the precinct felt a lot longer than the reality of the drive.
It wasn’t hard for Erin to get past Platt. So it wasn’t hard for her to get upstairs to Hank’s office quickly and with ease. Thanking Trudy, Erin slipped into Hank’s office and shut the door behind her. Throwing the file onto an empty spot on his desk Erin shook her head. “Do you even understand the definition of the word warrant?” She took a breath and ran a hand through her hair. “I can’t prosecute this case Hank. The judge threw out all of the evidence because the warrant was missing.” She explained and her frustration showed.

Hank was happy with the job he had done, another dangerous idiot off the streets and on the desk of the lawyers to sort out the rest of the stuff. Paperwork was far too over rated as he sat about glancing at more case files that lay on his desk, one down thirty to go he figured as set about making a case against the next guy. Hank had never been a fan of the good cop bad cop scenario, he was the worst cop in the sense that he got the job done by any means and sometimes it was all that was needed.
He was responsible for the criminals on the street and he wasnt about to let one go because of a rule or two. Nope he had a fix for that though now he was married to the State Attorney, it was a little more complex or at least he couldnt go around hitting people in public anymore. Nope they just fell down the stairs or accidently resisted arrest because who was he not to get the answers the fastest way possible? He had a way and he used it for right or wrong but still what the lawyers didnt know about couldnt hurt him.
Hank smiled when he heard Erin shut the door behind him, he was about to say something about a nice surprise until the file landed on the one empty spot he had on his desk because he had given the file to the resident idiot lawyer Kev. “Definition of the word warrant, a piece of paper that gives me permission to do things.” Hank stated as he knew the technical side to it but still he wasnt about to spout that out when he could see Erin’s frustration.
“Do you understand the definition of the words ‘in plain sight’?” Hank asked as he leaned back in his chair and clasped his hands, “It was in the open draw, in the cabinet that I could see.” Hank explained, leaving out the whole part about busting into the property, rounding a few corners and searching said cabinet to find the draw to leave open. Same effect and he didn’t need a warrant for that.
“Kev was slow and doing his usual righteous speech so we had to use our initiative. Shouldn’t you two be fighting to keep our evidence in? It’s his fault it’s out anyway, if he would have just done the paperwork right in the first place.” Hank added deciding that blaming the lawyer was a good a defence as any right now.

Erin nailed him with a look when he said the words in plain sight. “You do know the defense attorney turned over the camera footage of the search?” Erin sighed. “There is nothing I can do. The judge ruled the evidence inadmissable.” Hank was as frustrated as she was, and that was easy to tell in his demeanor. Erin was just giving him the facts, not playing a game of cat and mouse. One thing that she didn’t do was lead her husband on about any cases.
Okay so by Hank’s definition Kev was doing his job. “My hands are tied on this one Hank.” No, she had to serve the justice side of things. Hank and Kev had never exactly gotten along but that was not the issue here and they both knew it so Erin wasn’t going to beat a dead animal.
Grabbing one of the bags she had sitting on the chair, she headed for the same side of the desk that Hank was on and set lunch down on the other side of the desk. If she was going to bring bad news there was nothing wrong with bringing lunch with it right? Not that she really had a choice on the matter when it came to bringing the bad news.
Erin perched herself on the corner of Hank’s desk and set her hand down just in front of where his paperwork would be. “We can still get this guy. We just… have to start over.” Erin wanted to get this guy as much as Hank did. However, there was a right way to go about doing things. Hank was far from the mark.
Getting off the desk after a few moments she walked behind Hank and started massaging his shoulders. If anything he was going to be upset about all of this and the least she could do was to take care of him before things exploded. Erin was used to dealing with hotheads ahead of the game. Now she was married to one.

Hank gave Erin a look right back at the mention of camera footage of the search. “And you seriously allowed that to be entered into evidence?” Hank asked wanting to strangle the little twerp called Kev more each second, “Well then make it admissible, it’s what lawyers do find a loop hole or a signature or a reason to stick it to the other side... fix it.” Hank practically snapped as he was frustrated, he hated when cases fell apart and yes it was always to do with the lawyers. It was an unwritten rule of god that if a lawyer was involved then things got thrown out.
“Then untie them Erin, I know you can do that.” He asked her hating when their jobs crossed because of these exact situations. He was a cop and never understood the wonders of a court room as usually he was being picked apart in one. Hank glanced at the bags she had as he watched Erin sit on the desk. Lunch it had to be he thought silently, bad news and lunch which made the news a little less bad all things considered. For a start it had Erin in his office and food too so really for the day so far, it was turning out better and better.
“Yeah on what evidence, he knows were coming now and starting over... I give your office an air tight case and that idiot goes and pokes holes in it where there doesn’t need to be any.” He said as the idiot he was referring to was Kev. Hank took a breath when he felt Erin start massaging his shoulders, “You really can’t fix this? Not for a seven day holiday? Dinner cooked every night and spa days?” Hank asked deciding that if the usual routes didnt work then he had to at least try.
Hank let his head fall back against his chair as he gazed up at Erin. “You sure that the case can’t be fixed?” He asked her smiling sweetly as he let his hands run over hers before he rub his hands along her arms lightly.

Erin let Hank get it out of his system. “I can’t fix this Hank. It doesn’t work like that.” She could see he was uptight and the more he tried to wiggle his way out the more Erin had to reiterate herself. “I can do a lot of things babe, but not this.” She sat on his desk and argued the other point but she didn’t yell at him. No yelling wouldn’t help this situation any. She was just as frustrated about the case as she was, just… she was a little better at not exploding all over people.
“We’ve fixed cases with much worse circumstances.” She reminded him. Erin let Hank rant about Kev, she knew the two hated working together but not many lawyers would take on intelligence’s cases. It was a hard row to tow and she was willing to cut Kev some slack in this instance. It was his job to poke holes in a case to make sure it could stand up in court. Something she wasn’t about to explain to her husband because it would just keep a fight burning.
When Hank softened some, she knew it would be easier to talk to him about things but it wasn’t as straightforward as he was making it. “The only way to fix it, is to find another angle. It’s what you do and you are amazing at it.” She decided that complimenting him wasn’t off the table when she knew he was being hard on himself. Reaching in her back pocket she dropped an envelope on the desk in front of him.
The one arm she used to throw the envelope now was hugging Hank close to her. Her lips went to his ear. “It’s a warrant for the warehouse.” She whispered before placing a light kiss on his cheek. “The search done on his car still holds.” Erin wished she didn’t have to be the bearer of bad news all the time but better her than any other attorney in the office, they’d get their head on a platter. At least she could offer to smooth over the bad news too. Even if it meant making all the most adorable faces in the world.

“Well it should work like that.” Hank stated, he knew he was acting like a two year old but his case was falling apart because, well for a lot of reasons and he blamed the lawyers. “You’re superwoman when it comes to court, when it comes to a lot of things surely you can do this?” Hank asked knowing he was going over the same ground but maybe a smile and a sweet look from him might change her mind as he did just that. No one could fault him for lack of trying though really his case had just fallen to pieces and he wanst happy about it.
Erin was right, she was always right as he nodded knowing she had fixed his case when he knew he had done it and he was pretty sure she did too. “Yeah I know but... I hate fixing something that was tied in a neat bow.” Hank said practically having gift wrapped everything from the evidence to the actual arrest though now, yes the worlds issues were laid to rest at the feet of lawyers. Hank knew he had done some, creative work on the case but then they were cops they had to get creative sometimes.
Hank smiled at Erin when she said he was amazing at finding another angle. Damn it, why did she have to go and say that and make him all lala good at my job when a case was in pieces. “Fine, I’ll find another way but just don’t poke holes in this one. You’re amazing at your job too besides you know lunch was a great idea.” He said grinning figuring that lunch was a way to make the day better when he might have easily gone all Voight on the team to find the next angle when he was angry about it.
Hank glanced at the envelope she dropped on the desk, Hank hugged her back before he reached for the envelope. “See I knew you could fix this.” Hank said happily as he kissed her cheek for a moment, “Wait you’re telling me out of everything the car search holds up?” Hank said surprised though he soon covered that as he nodded. “Yes that’s great, car search and warehouse now so all in order.” Better not say anything about the car search now he thought though he was happy to see Erin. If Kev had done it he was sure he’d be up again for murder.
Placing the envelope back down on his desk he sighed. “So the search can wait for lunch besides half of the team is out thinking we’ve got this case in the bag.” He explained as he wasnt about to call everyone back in from lunch until lunch was done with. The more time spent with Erin the better in his mind. “Which now means my question is... what’s lunch?” He asked as he tickled at her sides lightly.

Erin was glad he wasn’t barging into the attorney’s office and giving Kev a piece of his mind. That could only end poorly. She started digging through the lunch bag and settings things up when he said something about the car search. Well it was the only place that had been searched without a warrant legally. She then heard him asking about what lunch was.
She had to oversee the new search warrant based on judge’s orders, it had been a heavy price to pay. Erin knew how Hank was about it though, it wouldnt be the safest place to go. The place was a warehouse and not exactly lawyer friendly.
Erin felt her husband tickling at her sides and she stood up squirming. “Since when is that work appropriate Sergeant?” She teased him lightly though she did enjoy when he did things like that. She turned around to face him again, her eyes searching his. Erin looked over his face, she could stare into his eyes all day. Too bad they were at work.
“I figured you might want Pizza.” She knew how he loved his Chicago Pizza. Erin wasn’t much for Pizza in general, she sometimes ate it but she was much more of a salad person. Leaning up against his desk she slid the pizza box out from behind her. “From your favorite place near home.” It was a place that was out of the way on her drive. They didn’t have it much while at work, because of its inconvenient location.
Erin hopped off his desk and pulled up a chair on the other side, reaching for her salad. One she would inevitably drown in dressing and nuts and everything else under the sun before she finally started to actually eat her food. Erin was like that, very picky about how she ate things.

Hank knew why the judge had ordered Erin to go along too but Hank wasnt exactly happy about it. A search wasnt a place for a civilian and although he knew Erin could shoot, he didnt want her in that position or the position where she could get hurt. Sometimes the paperwork stank and the judges ruling, well Hank wasnt exactly fond of it. Still how could he argue when it ended up with his wife in his office with lunch for the two of them. It was practically the good side to the case being screwed up if there could be a good side to it.
Hank raised his brow at her when she questioned what was work appropriate, “See it pays to be the boss Mrs. State’s Attorney so yeah I declare it is work appropriate for me. All legal too.” He said grinning as he tickled her a little more enjoying teasing her. Gazing into her eyes was one of the best things, he could gaze into them all day and not be bothered by anything. It was a shame that work got in the way of that but then again, a case screwed up and his wife there to stare at. His day might have been awful but now it was a whole lot better.
The word pizza hit his ear as he grinned at her, he did love his Chicago pizza. New York thought they had good pizza well no it wasnt anywhere near as good as Chicago. Hank stared at the pizza box as he recognised the logo on it from his favourite place. It wasnt anywhere near the office so he knew she would have had to have gone especially to the place for it. Hank stood for a moment and gave her a quick hug before sitting down again and trying not to drool over the pizza.
He watched Erin reach for her salad, he knew how this story went. He hadn’t ever seen anyone put as much dressing on a salad before though to be fair, he would have stuck it on top of pizza just to make it edible so Erin had his admiration for even attempting salad. To Hank salad was a side dish and not the main event. “I love you.” Hank stated as he opened the pizza box and grinned, “Are you sure you don’t want any pizza to make that salad edible?” Hank joked as he grinned though she was more than welcome to share.

Erin hated being at searches as much as Hank didn’t want her there. There were half a dozen ways and reasons it might go sideways. Most people didn’t like the cops showing up and it could get pretty nasty. This case was already all kinds of sideways on the legal side though and that’s why she had to interfere. Though Erin didn’t expect anything less from her husband so she shook her head and sighed. The moment it took for her to realize he had caught her gaze she felt like that could be her undoing. She could practically crumble under his eyes alone.
Must focus on work. She reminded herself of that but she couldn’t hold her tongue. “Flattery gets you nowhere sergeant.” Though her arms wrapped around him in return, her body language was telling him a different story. When he went to sit down with pizza, it was like watching a kid in a candy store. Erin still liked her New York style pizza, she was from New York after all. After her most of her family moved back to New York she was the one who had stayed after Jamie’s death because her life was here.
Three words that melted her and he could accomplish that easily. They didn’t necessarily throw those words around or use them at work. “Love you too.” She responded with a smile on her face. Erin knew she was lucky. Her eyes averted to the last few drops of salad dressing she was pouring over top her grilled chicken. Just because she had salad didn’t mean she didn’t appreciate her meats.
Cue comment about having an edible salad. “Salad without the pizza is sort of a preference.” The smirk that accompanied her response was slight. Hank’s weakness was pizza, hers was smoothies. Though this time she had settled for water as the smoothie place and the pizza place were not on the same side of town and she hadn’t felt like going out of her way. The smoothie place she could alway stop by on the way home from work.

Hank simply grinned at her words, honestly he could have gotten lost in her eyes and stared at them all day. It almost made him want to be a lawyer just so he could do that but then again the lawyer part wasnt exactly selling him. With her arms wrapped around him her body language said everything he needed to know. “Oh I think flattery is getting me everywhere Mrs . State Attorney.” He said trying not to grin too much, after all he was at work and had a reputation to keep. Being happy wasnt exactly in with the Hank Voight set of work skills.
Seeing Erin smile Hank couldnt help but smile back at her. Hank had to admit the best part about the salad she had was the meat part of it, in his world anything remotely healthy couldnt outnumber the unhealthy parts on a plate. Strange hours and late nights didnt help with eating healthy but it had gotten him that far in life so pizza versus salad it was the pizza that won each and every time. It had herbs on it too he was sure so technically that was all the greenery he needed to live off.
“Yeah, that argument makes no sense. Salad is green, pizza is all colours of wonderful. It has tomatoes which count as salad and really probably tastes a lot better than eighty percent water in a tub.” He said grinning as he sighed as he ate the pizza appreciatively. “But since you’ve no smoothie to go with it, I’ll get you one on the way to the warehouse and one for home too of course?” He offered as he hoped if she had a smoothie she might just take to sitting in the car and letting them do their job without putting herself in any danger.
Then again who was he really kidding with that, nope he could see her getting kitted out with the rest of them and he wouldnt let her out of his sight. “Speaking off, any chance you can hand off that warrant on someone else? Say Kev?” Hank asked as if Kev the lawyer got shot, Hank wasnt exactly going to be heartbroken over that. It would be an issue but at least Erin would be safe and that was all that mattered to him.

Erin smirked and sat down in his lap for a moment. His lap made for much more comfortable than another chair. She’d more or less learned how to manage eating a salad balanced on his knee. It wasn’t easy but she also thought he was far more comfortable than the chair. She set her salad on the corner of his desk as she took a few bites. If she had her mouth full she didn’t have to talk about much of anything.
Doing her job was just that, doing her job. Sure, she’d let him get her a smoothie but that didn’t mean she would give him leeway when it came to doing her job. She gave him a glare when he said something about handing it off to Kev. “You’re stuck with me.” Erin could easily hand it off to Kev if she wanted to do so but it was a little more complicated than that. Hank didn’t trust Kev and quite honestly, that was going to be a disaster waiting to happen. Erin stuffed a few pieces of salad in her mouth to keep from having to say anything farther. If she focused on eating, maybe they wouldn’t argue about this. Though she swallowed her bite of food and decided she’d try to meet him halfway. “I’ll wear a vest.” It was more of a promise than a statement.

Hank watched Erin as he grinned, watching her eat salad was great but when she was trying to balance on his knee. It had to be an art form as he jiggled his leg slightly as he tried to throw her off balance a little. Only for fun though and maybe to be a pain as he chewed on his slice of pizza. Food general meant silence simply because eating and talking was difficult. Especially when you loved the food you were eating and didnt want to stop. Not that he wouldnt talk to Erin but pizza from his favourite place, it deserved to be enjoyed.
The minute he saw the glare all he could do was grin sheepishly at her, she couldnt say he hadn’t tried to give her a peaceful afternoon. “Well I prefer you to him any day, so why can’t you be our go to warrant person?” Hank asked, knowing full well why but then again rules didnt exactly sit well with him. As she could probably tell by the reason she was there in the first place. Rules were more suggestions of the suggestion type. Like no breaking and entering, if you were a cop it was just called a search. If he happened to hear screaming on the other side of the door he thought murder not tv on too loud. So sure he was going to break in.
“Oh sure.” Hank said smiling at her, “I was thinking more the bomb squad suit just to make sure you’re safe but a vest is okay.” Hank wished he could be joking about that but despite his teasing tone he was semi serious about it too. “Anyway, I’m staying with you so just stick close and don’t risk anything.” He said though this time he was deadly serious about that. No checking rooms that weren’t cleared, no wondering off, no finding trouble. Nope Erin was going to be the safest person in the raid and he’d make sure of it.

Erin didn’t mind the little bit of silence as the two ate. She was prodding her salad with a fork and then periodically mixing in more dressing. She tried to make heads or tails of things. It wasn’t like she’d asked for this case to land on her desk. Just it had because Kev had done his job. That was all she could say about that.
Then cue Hank in on complaining about Kev again. She couldn’t exactly tell him that she’d given him one of her best lawyers, that would go over like a lead balloon. Erin was a lot stricter than Kev in some regards but somehow Hank didn’t seem to be put off by her rigid law ways.
Erin rolled her eyes when he said something about a bomb squad suit. She’d done things before the right way. She heard the serious tone in his voice and decided it was not worth the fight. It wasn’t like Erin couldn’t protect herself if she had to do so. Hank drove her nuts with that. “Fine.” She agreed but it was hardly the best of situations. However, she just needed to get in there and get her job done so they could close their case.

Eating it was quiet but then the pizza deserved attention in his world,, just as much as Erin did but then she knew what she was doing when she brightened his day with his favourite food. It was just annoying that the rest of the day was falling apart but then if it brought his wife to his office more often then he was happy about that. Maybe not great news that came with it but sure enough it was worth spending time with her even if it was to annoy her about her salad habits.
Hank knew that Kev was good at what he did, it just sometimes didnt fly with the over all concept of a unit that had freedom to do what they did. Some old rubbish about the rules and laws but yeah he was generally okay and probably gave them a little more leeway than anyone else which he wasnt sure Erin knew much about. Still Kev was a lawyer and that didnt exactly go along with Hanks great ideas.
Hank saw her roll her eyes at his suggestion but he was being serious for her own good and safety. The fine after that didnt quiet reach his brain as it stuck in his hears. “Erin I’m only trying to keep you safe, why are you arguing with me on this?” He asked her before he furrowed his brow at her. “Wait... why aren’t you arguing with me on it?” He added wondering why she have given in so easily. It wasnt exactly the best situation and Nicky had an absent father, he wasnt going to be responsible for taking away her mother. If it meant Erin was in bubble wrap then he would do it.

There was a job to do, Erin was going to make sure that it got done. “Hank, just let me do my job. Please?” She tried to reason with him. “If that requires wearing a vest, then so be it.” Erin put her fork down and looked towards him. Her facial expression showing no signs of teasing or joking. No this was a serious conversation and she was going to treat it accordingly. “I know what dangers it presents; but it’s part of my job. If you want to make sure that the house is cleared first then so be it, but I don’t want to see all of your work go down the drain on a technicality.” She gazed over his face.
“Just because I am a lawyer, doesn’t mean that I am out to argue with you.” Erin took a moment to get eye level with him. “I’m walking a thin line. The lawyer in me is fighting the wife in me.” She kissed the top of his head. “But at the end of the day, I have a job to do just as much as you do. Sometimes it means I’m in harm’s way. I’m willing to take things carefully. I have a family to come home to Hank.” Erin’s fingers ran along the back of his neck gently.
